House Republicans Pass US Debt Bill, Push Biden on Spending

House Republicans have narrowly passed a sweeping debt ceiling package as they try to push President Biden into negotiations on federal spending. It's the start of efforts to avoid a potentially catastrophic government debt default this summer. Biden has threatened to veto the bill over the budget limits that are attached. The president says he's happy to talk with Speaker Kevin McCarthy, but will not negotiate over America's legal debt obligations. The Republican plan would raise the debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion in exchange for steep spending restrictions that Democrats oppose.  from CBNNews.com https://ift.tt/2JtZ0jG via

Speaker McCarthy Unveils $1.5T Debt Bill, Pushes Toward Vote

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has unveiled a sweeping package that would raise the nation’s debt limit by $1.5 trillion into next year. The Republican leader announced the bill Wednesday just as President Joe Biden was preparing to deliver a speech in Maryland. The 320-page package imposes a long list of Republican priorities, including new spending caps, work requirements for recipients of government aid and others that are sure to be nonstarters for the White House. It has almost no chance of becoming law. But the Republican speaker is using the legislation as a strategic move, a starting point to draw Biden into negotiations that the White House has, so far, refused to to have over the debt crisis. from CBNNews.com https://ift.tt/aeCYif2 via

Supreme Court Hears Postal Worker Religious Liberty Case, Decision Expected by June

Supreme Court justices heard arguments Tuesday in a religious freedom case that could have far-reaching implications about religion in the workplace. The case, Groff vs. DeJoy, involves a former mail carrier who refused to work on Sundays because of his Christian faith and observance of the 4th Commandment –to remember the Sabbath. The plaintiff, Gerald Groff, said he chose postal work because there used to be no Sunday mail delivery. When the Postal Service started delivering packages on Sundays, he sought a religious accommodation from his employer, but that ultimately didn't work. During oral arguments Tuesday, Groff's attorneys argued that religious accommodations in the workplace need to be observed, while the government insisted Groff absences created undue burdens on other mail carriers. from CBNNews.com https://ift.tt/e5c3gu7 via
